My Fitness career began over 11 years ago when I made one of my best life decisions to gain my Level 3 PT qualification. Prior to that I had spent around 10 years traveling the world working as a professional Dancer.
Dance can be a bit of a superficial sport, with a focus on creating aesthetically pleasing movements for an audience’s pleasure. As much as I loved performing, there was always a pressure to look a certain way and to move a certain way and over time, this had some negative affects on my physical and mental health. I struggled with my relationship with food and exercise and my self image.
Throughout my Dance career I dabbled in a huge variety of fitness practices such as strength training, Pilates, Yoga and Martial Arts to essentially keep me in good shape. Back then my priority was to be lean and bendy, as that’s what was expected of me as a Dancer. But when my career came to an end back in 2013 mainly due to a list of injuries and a sense that my body couldn’t keep up with the demand, I felt like a weight had been lifted and there was a sense of ease. I continued to do these movement practices for my enjoyment rather than the aesthetic goals.
I realised that I actually loved moving my body and learning new skills. I realised I couldn't live without it, and that's when I started to enjoy the journey.
In the quest of my own mental and physical rehabilitation, I also discovered a real passion for learning about Nutrition and so completed a Diploma in Holistic Nutrition in 2013. This helped me form a new positive relationship with food. I fell more in love with Yoga as I saw it as a means to correct the imbalances and dysfunctions that years of Gymnastics and Dance had had on my body. I recently qualified as a Yoga Teacher in order to share this love with others.
That’s my story, it explains a bit about my relationship with my body, exercise and lifestyle habits. I recognise that everyone’s story is different. For this reason, I don’t believe in one-size fits all when it comes to health and fitness. Throughout my experience as a coach, I’ve developed the skill of being able to learn my clients story, find out what they’re motivated by, what they enjoy and what keeps them coming back with a sense of ease.
